It does not seem very long since I purchased my first personal computer, a Commodore64. The package came with a screen, a tape player, a five and a quarter inch disk drive, and a dot matrix printer. I still have the dozen or so texts that I subsequently purchased and read avidly on Commodore64 programming etc.
The quality of the end results from that printer were not as good as I could get with my Remington golf ball typewriter, but mistakes made were more easily fixed.
The Commodore was in perfect working order when I upgraded to my Amstrad computer and accessories and later to my Toshiba laptop. Compared to modern notebooks, that Toshiba weighed a tonne and had a hard to read blue screen, but I thought it was pretty cool at the time.
Haven't we come a long way technologically since the 1980's? I now have inexpensive flash drives about the size of my little finger which have more memory than all those early computers combined. And, my Remington golf ball typewriter ...! I purchased it for my business back in 1980 for $1,000. IBM's at the time were selling for $1,200. I was chuffed with my bargain. I even had several different golf balls included so I could easily change fonts.
That "bargain" is sitting up on a shelf in my shed along with several computers probably all still in perfect working order, but not being used. One day I may get around to getting rid of them ...!
Software, hardware and other costs associated with the WWW are getting less and less. Anyone can easily and inexpensively have a presence out there on th WWW with their own web site, whether that web site be a personal site, one regarding a hobby or passion, or for a club, class, school, business or whatever.
I would be happy to discuss options available, or refer anyone interested who would like to learn more to relevant web sites.
Happy computing
Regards
Ian McKenzie
